Nikos Karamanos
University of Patras
Nikos K. Karamanos is a Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Patras, a European Registered Toxicologist (ERT), and an expert in EU research projects. He serves as editor in several international journals and holds leadership roles in scientific societies, including the Hellenic Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (HSBMB) and the International Society of Matrix Biology (ISMB). Previously Vice-Rector of Academic & International Affairs (2014–2020) of the University of Patras, he is now a governing body member (2024–present). Prof. Karamanos has organized FEBS Advanced Lecture Courses in “Matrix Pathobiology, Signaling and Molecular Targets” and “Extracellular Matrix: Cell Regulation, Epigenetics and Modeling” (2007-2022) and served as a FEBS Education Ambassador (2016–2019). He is Series Editor of Biology of Extracellular Matrix (Springer-Nature) and has guest-edited 20 special journal issues. With over 360 publications, he is a highly cited researcher (Clarivate, fields Biology and Biochemistry) and ranks among the top 2% of scientists (AD Scientific Index). He has supervised 20 PhDs and 70 MSc theses. His research focuses on extracellular matrix (ECM) pathobiology, tumor microenvironment, and molecular targeting in cancer. He studies proteoglycans, glycosaminoglycans, metalloproteinases, and epigenetic regulation in disease progression. His work also explores cell signaling, growth factors, and cytokines in ECM remodeling. Additionally, he develops 3D cell-ECM models for drug evaluation and cytotoxicity studies.
